Time is such a valuable asset to a small business. Without a speedy internet connection you may feel like you are wasting some of that precious time. On the other hand you don't feel you have the time to figure out how to get your internet connection to work any faster.

The good new is that there are solutions galore no matter what your budget or how much time you can invest. You will be able make improvement in most cases without a lot of effort, time or money. Of course there are even better options for the money. Most of these will be worth it to someone trying to run a business.

Visual enhancements:
One thing that people have noticed about one of the newer operating systems is that it has very cool visual enhancements that use a significant amount of memory causing the other operations on the computer to slow. These can be turned off. It may not be worth it to you being as they represents the main improvement in that operating system.

The server:
With dial up you may find that the internet works faster for you some of the time and slower at other times. If you can locate the numbers that your computer dials to connect with your local server you may be able to determine if one server seems to operate better for you then another. It is good to have several numbers so that your computer can connect to the one that is available. But you can usually prioritize the numbers that you want to dial first in concession.

There are certain times of the day when the internet may seem to be faster then other times. This has to do with the traffic on the server. It is possible that during those time when you need it most one server will function at a better speed then another. Some servers are slower then others.

There are some cases where the change in traffic on the server is so significant that you may want to consider setting computation time for in the morning when traffic is usually low.

The modem speed:
Most new computers have a 56K modem. It is possible however that your computer is set at a slower speed. If you bought the computer in the last two years you can almost bet that your settings are suppose to be at 56K. This is worth checking, in that it will make a huge difference if your speed problem lies within the modem speed.

The quality of the phone line or cable:
Line noise can slow a connection. If you have a long cord or other things between your phone connection and your computer this might cause the noise.
