Travel destinations: Cozumel, Mexico

Located about 40 miles off the shore of the Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel Mexico's pristine beaches, warm ocean water and convenient access to jungle tours are just some of the reasons that Cozumel is consistently ranked in the top five of the world's most popular vacation spots.

Cozumel, Mexico's largest island is 29 miles long and 12 miles wide. Cozumel's limestone shore is surrounded by temperate, crystal clear waters which range from stunning turquoise to deep indigo. Famous all over the world for its coral reefs, there are plenty of water sports such as diving, deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, kayaking and more, but you don't have to get wet to discover the appeal of this easy-going, sleepy island.

History of Cozumel

Long before the Spanish began colonizing the island, the ancient Mayans inhabited Cozumel. Whether you make plans to stay near the beach during your Cozumel travel, or venture inland to tour ancient Mayan ruins, there is no shortage of activities to enjoy in Cozumel. Cozumel's mostly undeveloped territory at the center of the island is covered by jungle and swampy lagoons, which are home to tiny native mammals and exotic birds that have never left the island.

Cozumel's west coast is where you will find the majority of the island's development. It is also the most populated island in Mexico with an estimated population of around 90,000.

Shopping in Cozumel

Take the time to explore the beautiful, windswept, eastern beaches that are wonderful for picnics, sunning and shell collecting. Non-divers can kick back on a sun-drenched beach, or enjoy any number of seaside activities, such as shopping in colorful marketplaces or dining in an open-air caf.

Local Currency - Mexico's currency is the peso. Cozumel offers unbelievable prices on diamonds, colored gemstones, jewelry, watches, gold, sterling silver, and even Oriental rugs as well as local Mexican housewares and handicrafts.

Cozumel Tourism

Like the ancient Mayans, today many cruise ship passengers and tourists still flock to Cozumel Mexico each year. Given the growing popularity of Cozumel, the island has a number of excellent resorts and a few cozy Bed and Breakfasts can also be found. Cozumel holds a very special place for visitors that repeatedly return to the island to fish, dive, snorkel or relax.
