A fresh approach to finding new music

I have always been the kind of person to go out and hunt for new music. It started when I was a 9 year old Meat Loaf fan and I decided to go out and find out which music had influenced him, who he had worked with and which bands had been influenced by him. Ever since then, my quest for new music has never stopped.

The following are some of my favourite and most successful ways of finding new music.

* If there's a band that you really like, then go to their website and see if they have any other bands listed on their Links page (most websites will have one of these). If they do, check these bands out - it's more than likely that the bands listed will be of a similar style to the one you like. This method worked particularly well for me recently when I went to Devilish Impressions' site and found out about Vesania.

* MySpace is another great place to find music. Admittedly you will come across quite a bit of rubbish there, but I can assure you that you will find some diamonds. I recently found out about a band called Agathodaimon because of MySpace and I have since purchased all of their albums. Not bad, eh?

* Forums. I am a member of many a music forum and on these forums people are more than keen to tell you about which bands they think you should listen to. I recently discovered a somewhat old band through this method when a member of my own forum told me about Phlebotomized. Again, I have since purchased everything I can and I even interview one of the, now ex, members for my own website.

* Pandora. I love Pandora.com - it's a fantastic website. It's kind of an online radio where you choose the style. All you need to do is tell the site which bands/musicians/songs that you like and it will find similar ones that it thinks you will enjoy. I've found many a great band on there - including Morgul (now one of my personal favourites!).

* Second-hand CD/Record Shops - this is one of my all-time favourite ways to discover new music. I've picked up lots of albums through this method and I've rarely been disappointed. It's one of those moments where it actually pays to judge a book (or rather an album!) by it's cover. I've found that a good way to find something I like is to look at the record label, the band name, etc. I discovered one of my all time favourite bands (and favourite albums!) by using this method - Vesperian Sorrow.

* The final way to find music which I'm going to write about today is by going to gigs. If you go to see a band, make sure that you always check out the support act.

There are, of course, a number of other great ways to find music (such as word of mouth!), but those are just a few. I hope I've helped a few Helium readers out with this!
