For this I will use Microsoft terms and Microsoft related issues when I talk about software.

Clean it, cool it, Control it are my three rules when giving advice on computer speed.

When we clean our pc, we do it physically and software wise. for starts you need to remove all dust and hair balls from any and every heatsink in your computer. Remember disconnect all power before you do anything.before you touch anything write down all manufacture names and model numbers. Clean dust off of all fans and all ventilations. Remove dust from all memory. If you have the chance replace heat paste but don't go into it if you do not know what you are doing.
Airflow is key here make sure air flows in a fluid motion and not rerouted or distorted by objects, tie back what you can with plastic ties, I actually use velcro this helps you control the airflow with the least amount of disruption.
once you have the internal area cleaned and dusted, we boot to operating system. press the start button select "run" type in "msconfig" click the far right tabe and locate all programs that are set to run at start up. now go back to start button then to accessories and locate each program and change the settings in that program to not run at start up. This will help plenty.
Click start click control panel open up "add and remove" and locate any programs that you once installed and no longer use and are sure you will never use again, or programs that you know for a fact that you have never used and never will use. remove those items.
If you have malware search a-squared search spybot search and destroy search addaware. and use these programs to scan your machine, they are all free. To prevent that stuff from coming back so easily, do a google search for "hosts file" you should find a site by a creater named mvps. read the page follow instructions, this is a way of locking your computer out of bad sites and servers.

now with all of your manufacture names and model numbers go to the sites associated with parts and update your drivers, if you can, update your bios. If you have no idea how to, then don't do it.Too dang risky.
Use any browser other than Internet explorer and get the addons that stop pop ups and anything scripting.
dump all temporary Internet files in the options area of what ever browser you have used,Defragment your hard drive (s).
Reboot computer and head to pcpitstop and re-benchmark your computer
