Helping your cat when it's in heat

outside cats is a possible option; however given the fact that often the signs of a cat going into heat are undetectable, it is a chance one should not take. Additionally, cats are extremely intelligent creatures. My pet cat can open doors to bedrooms, slip through some of the tiniest places, and hide in some of the smallest areas one would not believe he would fit in. It does not matter that this animal weighs in at approximately 15 to 18 pounds. He is an avid prankster; he can and will get out if the notion strikes him. Thankfully, he has no desire to go outside. The primary reason he does not attempt to go outdoors, according to our personal veterinarian is that he had the neutering surgery before he was old enough to have those "tom-cat" instincts kick in. The cat I own came from a county-sponsored animal league shelter. Some uncaring and undeserving cat owner decided against having the primary cat in the home spayed, my cat and his sister were the result. This somebody threw a box onto the concrete steps of the animal league's building. Fortunately, someone was in the building that night nursing another injured animal and heard the mewing of the two kittens within the box as well as the vehicle that sped away leaving them there to fend for each other until morning or so the previous owners believed. The kittens suffered from dehydration and lack of substance in their little tummies. Neither of the kittens was old enough to survive without their mother's milk so the employees of the animal league fed them from bottles until each could lap food from a small bowl. A few weeks later, the male of the pair came to live with us but not before stopping at our veterinarian's office so he could perform a diagnostic series of tests and immediate neutering surgery before bringing the animal home. The animal league ensured the kittens had all their shots up to that point in time. We returned him to the veterinarian for the next series of vaccines and he returns every year for the staple vaccines and rabies vaccines.

So, as you can tell, there is only one solution to comforting your cat when she goes into heat and that is to take your cat to the nearest veterinarian office for an appointment to have the animal spayed for her benefit. It is the best solution all around.
