Helping your cat when it's in heat

The problem with cats and cats in heat is the fact that from the time a kitten reaches the age of 5 to 6 months of age, the cat remains in a constant state of heat according to Dr. Adrienne Mulligan, owner of Camp Verde Veterinarian Clinic. Purebred cats tend to come into heat a little later in their lives than the average domestic house cat although one does not want to take the chance because regardless of breeding, all cats will come into heat eventually. The only way to help a cat in heat is to have a reputable veterinarian spay/neuter all cats in the home.

The HSUS group estimates through research that one lone cat coupled with an unneutered male cat can produce well over 400,000 cats over the course of seven years via the primary impregnated cat and her offspring if the primary cat, generally referred to as "cat zero" without spaying prior to pregnancy. This is the primary reason for the overpopulation of cats in the world today.

Dr. Mulligan does an excellent job explaining the fact of how cats go into what veterinarians refer to as forced ovulation, which means they are always ready to ovulate. Despite not having any signs or symptoms, a cat can still become pregnant. Cats do not have seasons such as canines so there are no way other than to become a responsible cat owner by having your cat spay or neutered to protect the cat population.

If one cat pairing is the result of the sire or bitch having a genetic disorder or disease, then the chances are high that most if not all the kittens born to these two cats will suffer the same disease or disorder. Spay and neutering your pets is safe, responsible, and helps prevent the overflow of kennels where far too many have no choice but to resort to euthanasia as a manner to handle the overpopulation. Euthanasia is a horrible yet humane procedure considering most cats will become ill and infect others while continuing to breed. Without funding to feed, shelter, and care for all the cats that nobody wants or cares enough to spay or neuter, it is the only solution for financial and safety reasons.

If you find yourself with a cat that is obviously in heat, the best way to care for this animal is to take this cat to the closest veterinarian clinic immediately to have the cat spayed. Your cat will be better for it as will you. The procedure is quick, pain-free, and barring any complications, you can take your favorite pet home that very evening.
