and choose to be present in their interactions. This means not being dismissive or distracted, but listening and responding to their peers as they would respond to the company's most important client.
Make their Day is about going above and beyond people's expectations. This concept can be something as simple as turning in the report a day sooner than expected; bringing bagels to the morning meeting; offering to share or assume the tasks of an important project; anything that goes beyond the usual. It can be big or small, but it can and will make someone's day.
And probably one of the most important elements of the fishmongers' winning strategy is Play. That's right, find a way to make the work fun. At the market, it only takes a moment to see the fishmongers at play - calling out the names of the fish and throwing them, and hopefully catching them, before a delighted and sometimes surprised audience. True, your employees won't have many opportunities to lobe a King Salmon over the cubicles. It goes back to not necessarily loving the work, but loving how the work gets done. What kind of fun could your organization interject into the workplace? Contests, cook-outs, fieldtrips, festive decorations or specially themed days? Your employees will have a number of ideas on how to make the work more fun.
Businesses operate to generate a profit. When employees choose their attitude, are present, engage in the mindset of making someone's day, and have the opportunity to play, the result is reflected in improved morale and increased profits. Just ask the world famous fishmongers. They will play, they will demonstrate a positive attitude, and if you stop to talk to them, two things will happen: they will be present, and you can bet that these guys will do their best to make your day.
