Feminism is the name of a number of social, cultural and political movements, theories and moral philosophies that are concerned with cultural, political and economic practices and inequalities that discriminate against women.Women have struggled for equal rights for years. One of the first women's rights declaration was the "Declaration of Sentiments". From women's involvement within the abolition movements, women became aware of the male dominance and oppression. The History of feminism reaches far back before the 18th century, but the seeds of the feminist movement were planted during the latter portion of that century. The advent of the reformist age during the 19th century meant that those invisible minorities or marginalised majorities were to find a catalyst and a microcosm in such new tendencies of reform.
Since then however women have gained many rights and can now be seem by many as equal to men. Women now have the right to vote, earn the same as men, have the same rights when it comes to divorce ect.
Many feminists today regard feminism as a grass-roots movement that seeks to cross boundaries based on social class, race, culture and religion. They also argue that an effective feminist movement should address both universal issues, such as rape, incest, and prostitution, and culturally specific issues relevant to the women of the society in question, such as female genital cutting in some parts of Africa and the Middle East and "glass ceiling" practices that impede women's advancement in developed economies. Feminism also explores subjects including patriarchy, stereotyping, sexual objectification and oppression.
Feminism in the original term is therefore in my opinion outdated. In todays society women are equal to men, and that is what feminism was all about. No group of people are ever going to be completely equal to others in the eyes of others and so then it is determined by the people in control of our society i.e. the government as to how equal each group is.
