We have become experts at balancing our lives. Juggling schedules, multi-tasking, somehow being in two places at once. We do these things because it is a part of who we are today. Unquestioningly, we put more stress and physical pressure on ourselves, and some of the time we even enjoy it. We seek out those quiet times when we really are almost alone, and squeeze in a few yoga postures. We relish a fun day with the kids doing "nothing" at home. This feels like a balanced life, but there is still something a little crooked here. Out of whack, if you will.
I, like many parents, am an expert on my children's health histories. I inherently "know" when one of them is sick, and will do anything I can to ease their discomfort and pain. Yet, I manage to neglect my own health and lived with chronic pain in my back and hip for years. After three pregnancies, back pain seemed to be a fact of my life. My sleeping schedule, especially when pregnant, became erratic and getting out of bed every morning was actually agonizing. Since I had a 4 month old and a 17 month old at the time, I was definitely carrying some extra weight around (and could actually lift both of them at once when necessary!). I have never been a fan of narcotic or prescription drugs and am growing wearier of over-the-counter medications that do not work. So, I tried heat pads, exercise, massage therapy, etc. and found some relief, temporarily. But, in the long run, I thought, I had too many other things to worry about. After all, I eat well, and still can touch my toes. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger, right? Until one day, when I realized that at 33 I was walking the same way that my 65 year old mother walks. Respectfully, she is not the model of physical health that I would like to emulate for my own children.
Fortunately, it was around this time that I discovered chiropractic care and finally found some answers to help me get balanced physically. I knew next to nothing about Chiropractic when I sat down for my "free exam" at my 10 year old son's school fair. I was drawn in by the large plastic model of a vertebra which must have been sending signals to my nervous system, as a shooting pain passed through me at the same time. Perhaps the infant in sling over my shoulder contributed too. I must have looked like I needed help because the doctor offered me a discounted exam at his office. Though I still had doubts, I felt desperate so I actually called him that Monday. I tell you it changed
