This is an issue that evokes strong emotions on both sides. And both choices are laced with a lot of rewards accompanied by their fair share of guilt, sacrifice and resentment!
I personally have chosen to stay at home to take care of my kids. The choice has not been an easy one to make and I am often assailed with doubts on my sanity. But, if I had to choose again, I would do exactly the same thing.
Staying at home has given me the freedom to schedule my day along the needs of my children. Our children are babies, just once, and that is the only time in their lives that they are at home all the time. Once they start school, their lives are determined by school timings, after-school-activities and friends. But,as babies, they are there waiting to share all their experiences and learning with you. And watching a helpless, wailing infant transform into an ever-curious and sociable toddler and then into a happy and confident pre-schooler has been one of the most profound experiences of my life.
When I stayed back at home, I was able to see this process of growth from close quarters and it never ceases to amaze me that in watching them learn, I have learned so much, myself.
However, this is not to say that the whole experience has been a bed of roses. There are many moments when the relentless crying and endless cleaning made me feel like a zombie. When you decide to eat, sleep, bathe, talk on the phone or watch TV, is all determined by someone who is so tiny and helpless............it would be quite amusing, if it wasn't so exasperating!
I do believe that this choice is a personal one to make and many women are at peace when concentrating only on parenting, while others are happier juggling work and home. Either choice does not diminish the joys of parenthood........it's just a matter of personal preference.
