The Simpsons have played host to a whole number of celebrity guests. Some guests have appeared as themselves with the odd line, others have a plot line connected to the Simpson family. I liked the episode which starred Ricky Gervais (from The Office). That episode was a version of Wife Swap, and Ricky Gervais was matched up with Marge, and subsequently fell for her. But I'm not sure that there really is any one guest starrer who deserves the title of 'Most Memorable Guest'.
Kelsey Grammar, plays Sideshow Bob, and is probably one of the more regular celebrity guests.
Dustin Hoffman, he played Mr. Bergstrom, the substitute teacher on whom Lisa developed a crush.
Ringo Starr, he played himself and wrote a letter to Marge after she painted him.
Larry King, he narrates the Bible on tape during the episode where Homer thinks he will die from from food poisoning.
Danny DeVito, plays Herb Powell, Homer's long lost half-brother.
Michael Jackson, he plays Leon Kompowski, a white mental patient who thinks he is Michael Jackson.
Aerosmith, played a gig at Moe's.
Sting, played himself during the episode where Bart gets stuck down a well.
Tom Jones, played himself when he was kidnapped by Burns to perform a song for Marge.
Leonard Nimoy, played himself as a passenger on the monorail's doomed maiden voyage.
Meryl Streep, she played Jessica Lovejoy, Bart's troublesome girlfriend and Reverend Lovejoys daughter.
Paul & Linda McCartney, played themselves during an episode where Lisa becomes a vegetarian.
Glenn Close, she played Homer's mother.
Jerry Springer, played himself during the episode where Maggie's father was the alien Kang.
Mel Gibson, played himself and hired Homer to remake his movie.
There are many more who have appeared in The Simpsons over the years, and I'm sure that right now you're coming up with more names. The one thing to note is that the guests have varied, from actors to singers to television show hosts. Even Stephen Hawking got to have a beer with Homer.
And that is probably why The Simpsons is so appealing. You don't have to be in any particular group, you don't have to be a certain age. As long as you're willing to entertain, the Simpsons family are willing to have you.
