How to rebuild trust in a marriage damaged by infidelities

Infidelities in marriage can cause much damage and heartache, with the spouse who has been cheated on feeling rejected, unloved and angry. This is usually accompanied by a dip in self esteem and sometimes depression. To learn to trust again can be tough.

If the person who has been unfaithful agrees to go to counseling to try to work out their motivation for the affair it can help by letting the other spouse see that they are making an effort and are trying to change.

Where the unfaithful spouse merely says that they are sorry and that it will not happen again this is often not enough as their 'word' has already been broken before and so their honesty is in question.

Some show of how the unfaithful person is going to change and remain faithful in the future is a must in order for them to regain the trust that is now sorely lacking in the marriage. Although good communication is needed a change in behavior is even more necessary. By this I do not mean just stopping the infidelities I mean the behavior within the relationship.

In-order to re-gain what has been lost the one who has committed the infidelities needs to be willing to go out of their way to give their spouse complete attention. They also need to understand and accept that their spouse will need to work through their hurt and anger actively, even long after the affairs have ended. They will need to see that this is a direct result of their behavior and to take responsibility for it.

Only time will tell whether this is enough. Sadly it may be that the spouse who has been cheated on can never truly forgive and forget. The infidelity eats away at them and the damage has been done. In such a case divorce usually follows.
