To determine the best layout for your vehicle, ask yourself the following questions:
1. What kind of sound do you want?
A deep bass sound can be achieved by 12" subwoofers, usually mounted in a bandpass box behind your seats (or in your trunk). For a clearer, higher quality sound you should balance your subwoofers with mids and highs. Mids (6x9s, etc.) can be mounted in most doors, and highs (tweeters) can be mounted in the corner where your headboard meets the top of your door.
2. How much airspace does your vehicle have?
As a rule of thumb, the more airspace, the more subwoofers it can accomodate. An Eclipse sounds wonderful with one 12" in the trunk, whereas a Bronco can rock with four.
3. Power
If you are running a large system, not only will you need an amp, but you may need additional batteries (I've seen up to 12) to charge while the system is off.
4. Loose Ends
No matter what kind of system you choose, you should be sure to foam in or otherwise manipulate vibration spaces in your vehicle... for most, this includes the license plate and trunk. Trucks may have vibration between the cab and the bed. This should be eliminated to avoid the irritating sounds these spaces produce when bass is applied.
Good luck!
