I have had several friends question my interest and willingness to work in nonprofits after undertaking expensive educations, but there are many reasons you should consider nonprofit work.
I chose to work in the nonprofit world because of the service you provide to your community (whether it is local or global). With such an interconnected world, it is important that some people take the time to focus on helping others. A communal society is one that I wish for, but I recognize is difficult to do.
Ultimately, I believe you should follow your heart. You certainly should find a job that allows you to live without major hardship, but if you have certain interests and passions, you should try to pursue those as well.
One myth is that it is difficult to survive and pay off loans by working in a nonprofit, but that is not the case. I live in one of the most expensive cities in the US, but I am still able to live alone and not accrue further debt.
One of the most difficult aspects of working in a nonprofit is financially based, but the thought of your work helping others is enough of a reward. Though nonprofits are often psychologically rewarding, they are difficult for people with large undergraduate or graduate debt. It is much easier to enter a field that provides more financial compensation, but you may not be listening to your heart.
However, you can always volunteer to assist in some of the nonprofit's work, or you could spend time advising the nonprofit by being part of the board. Though not officially "work", it is an opportunity for all those who might be interested in working with the community to get involved.
