How do you know if a child is ready to learn to crochet?
Some children have learned as early as six years old. The best way to know if a child is ready is if they demonstrate a real interest. Fine motor skills and hand eye coordination are important in crocheting so there are a few questions that you can ask yourself to determine if a child has the skills to learn to crochet.
Does this child handle writing easily?
Does this child and use scissors easily?
Can this child easily tie their shoes?
If you've answered yes to these questions and the child is showing an interest in learning to crochet, then the time is right.
What is crocheting?
In case there is a child interested in crocheting and you are unfamiliar with it, crocheting is creating a fabric using a hook to make loops in yarn. The difference between knitting and crocheting is that a single hook is used to crochet and two sticks are used to knit.
Tips for Beginners:
For beginners a larger size hook and thicker yarn are easier to work with. A child needs a demonstration on how to make a chain by pulling yarn through a loop and making another loop. If you don't have crochet experience, visit a local craft store and ask for a demonstration. Watch local listings. In some areas even the local library has crochet classes or stitch -in meetings.
You can also visit websites such as crochetpatterncentral.com that show step by step photos. They also have patterns for kid's projects from simple scarves to more elaborate clothes and bags.
if your are teaching a child to crochet, consider their attention span. It is best to begin with 15 minute teaching sessions and build from there as the child becomes more comfortable and successful.
Best Projects for Beginners:
Kids are often anxious to take on creative tasks but a sweater is not really the best place to start. A square washcloth or a scarf are good beginner projects.
Crocheting Gifts or for Charities:
If a youngster comes to love to crochet, they will certainly want to make gifts for friends and family but if they have even more time there are great charities that accept crocheted blankets and hats for children, animals and especially preemies. Visit angelsforhope.org, heavenlyangelsinneed.com or snugglesproject.com.
Crocheting is a relaxing and useful hobby for kids. Children can really build up self-esteem one stitch at a time as they complete a crochet project. Crocheting is also a great way spend some intergenerational time together and is a perfect wintertime hobby for when the time changes.
