There are so many beneficial ways to raise children today that it almost seems ridiculous to see parents resort the strong-armed bullying tactics of 'might makes right". Too often these parents do not want to take the extra time to teach, guide, and discipline their children. Instead they choose to simply hit them until they meekly obey the parents wishes. No where in this does it teach the lesson the parent truly needs to be teaching.
When we hit our children to stop an action we are not teaching them why the action is harmful or wrong, only that the result of said action is to be hit by those whom the chld loves and depends on the most. Certainly spanking works to end the action swiftly, but it does nothing to guide or to teach the child.
Spanking has no place in normal society. What would you do it after being pulled over for speeding the police officer spanked you? What if your spouce spanked you for not completing a task you were asked to complete? What if as adults your parents were still free to spank you for actions that displeased them? You might scoff at these situations, but the actions are comparable. hitting another person is wrong, and children are people too.
Many like to support their "right' to spank by quoting 'Spare the rod, spoil the child." To them I would like to point out that this is a misinterpritation of a very loving quote. Imagine that you were a shepard in charge of a flock of sheep. would you use your rod to hit and force the sheep, or would you use it to guide them and protect them from others? Surely children are more important than sheep, yet we choose to treat them worse. Remember that Jesus says "Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me." When you raise your hand to spank your child, you are raising your hand to Jesus as well.
