The writer's office: What you really need

To set up the perfect writer's home office, you need to start with the tools of the trade. That means you need a computer with decent RAM and hard drive as well as wired and wireless connections to the Internet and a telephone. Even better than this is a laptop, which means you can write anywhere. Add to this a printer and an Internet connection and you have the basic technological equipment.

Other useful gadgets include a digital camera for taking pictures to go with your written work, a scanner for scanning in prints, a PDA for keeping track of appointments and a digital recorder for recording interviews. And keep a USB stick for transporting files and quick backups.

However, not all resources for your office have to be technical. Every writer should have a notepad and pen or pencil at all times.

Other items to complete a writer's office include a comfortable, ergonomic chair and a desk with a keyboard shelf at the right height. These will help you to avoid tendinitis and back pain.

My writer's office also includes shelves for storing notes, paperwork and so on - and a cork board where I can pin up the items I need to keep handy.
