Thinking of taking a long distance ride? Not sure if you have enough energy?
The key to endurance is simple.
It's not just a question of having enough fuel but also preventing the "wear and tear" factor.
You have to imagine yourself as a car going cross country. Sure, you would need to make sure you have enough gas. But, don't forget to look under the hood and kick the tires a few. Because, even if you have enough gas, and your carburetor or left wheel falls off... Enough said.
Fuel = food and water. Not only on the day of the ride but on the days building up to it. Keep yourself hydrated at all times. This means sipping an ounce or so every five or so minutes. If you feel thirsty, then you are already too dehydrated. The same thing with food. From my experience, little snacks (granola bars, partial sandwich, partial banana) are excellent. Every metabolism is different so you have to gauge the quantity yourself. The trick is consistency.
Engine check/wheel kick = preparation. This means physical exercise. If you intend to ride 50 miles, you should ride at least 5 miles three days a week for a month. If you can build it up to about 50% of your target distance. Make sure your pace is faster than your intended target pace.
The last thing on this is consistency. Establish a pace in the beginning and stick to it. Preferably, start slightly slower in the beginning and then pick up the pace a little after the first tenth of the way.
Good luck and happy riding.
