In a word? Yes! Football players are paid millions of dollars to play a game, but guess what? We're at fault!
We, as fans, are the ones willing to pay as much as we do for tickets to the game. For beer, hot dogs, and any other concessions that end up going to the owner of the football team. With that revenue, the owners are able to pay those millions of dollars to the players. Sure, every once in a while its the owners who raise ticket prices to help pay for the high salaries, making it more expensive to come to the games. But again, we, as fans, still choose to come to the games and pay for the expensive tickets, overpriced beer and hot dogs. We are enabling the owners to pay for these players, because they know they have the revenue to pay for the salaries.
Of course, one solution would be for an entire city to go on strike. For example, if the entire city of Detroit decided to join together and not go to a single game all season long (and who could blame them with as bad as the Lions), the Detroit Lions would lose an incredible amount of money. After only one or two games, they would be discounting seats in such an unbelievable way, trying to get people into the stadium.
But of course, it's hard to organize a strike for an entire city. There are the die-hard fans that would rather spend the money to watch the game, or the people with a lot of money that don't mind having to shell out a lot of money for the game.
So as I've said, football players are being paid way too much. But unless the fans want to make a change, the football players will continue to make too much money. And we can't complain about it as long as we're enabling them.
