Your place of study reflects you your personality, your needs and your ability to deal with a range of invariable distractions. There are generally 2 types of students in study mode. One is the loner and the other is the socialite.
1. The Loner
Usually, the loner prefers peace and space. The loner may consider a range of possibilities to study.
(a) A regular study area at home, so that all material is readily accessible.* The regular study area allows material to be organized in order of priority. It is an area of personal space and ownership.
(b) An alternative study area at home outside so that fresh air may stimulate the braincells.* Here is an attractive option to the loner, because the main study source is not far when needed. This alternative area may be under a tree in the backyard or on a sheltered verandah. These options presume that the loner can cope with passing distractions, without losing a flow of concentration.
(c) The college library or the local library.* Both places offer a quiet, refreshing alternative to the home base. However, the deterrent for this option is it may require carting a wheelbarrow of notes to the study place. Only choose this option when minimal baggage is required, and further research on a topic is one of the main purposes of being there.
2. The Socialite
The socialite may feel quite stressed if confined to a lonely study space for any length of time. Such stress breeds poor quality study habits. The socialite may seek any distraction to escape. "The house plants need watering!" OR "That bathroom really needs a good clean!" (Yes! This IS a socialite. Here is a person who needs some form of contact, some form of physical business!) "It is so long since I rang Mum!" (Possibly the last study session!) Such a socialite MUST get away from the house! There are levels of "contact" for each level of socialite.
(a) The college library or the local library.* Just having people around may be enough for the quieter socialite.
(b) A regular study group meeting with other students.* Studying and socializing may be the perfect mix! The meeting could be on the college lawns under a tree (on fine days) or in a favourite caf or in a student's home. The latter could be done on a rotational basis to keep the possible drain on food supplies fair!
(c) An irregular contact with other students.* This option is particularly desirable for those who need reassurance that they are on the right track. Yes! It's the phone!
Where to study? Choose a place where your personality is at ease in your environment, but not so at ease that you take every opportunity to pursue alternative interests. Aim to make your personality, your need to study diligently and your environment mutually compatible.
