In order to set goals you can achieve you have to make sure your goals have eight characteristics.
1. Goals have to be written. When you write out your goals it helps you to establish clarity about what you are trying to accomplish. Writing out goals gives you a road map on how to get from A to Z and you are more likely to accomplish all of your objectives. And lastly, don't miss this point, when you write out your goals something happens in the subconscious mind that causes you to react and bring those things into existence. So write out your goals and it put you on target to achieve them.
2. Personal. In order to accomplish your goals they must be your own personal goals. I cannot set goals for anyone else nor can anyone else set goals for me. Some years ago my daughter indicated she wanted to do so running to get in shape. Somewhere along the line the communication got misinterpreted and I thought she wanted to run track for her school. Every morning when we would go out to run on the track she had a look of disgust because I was really pushing her to get in shape for the track team. She wanted this to be more of a casual leisurely experience. Getting in shape for the track team was actually my goal not hers. When your goals are personal you are more likely to continue with them when the obstacles, trials and tribulations surface, and they will. If the goals were established by someone else and you are not passionate about them you will stop at the first sign of discouragement.
3. Continual. The goal setting process is continual. Once you hit one goal you move on to the next and the next. You never stop setting goals. Always start out with something small and work your way up to the mega goals. Hitting goals that are not so difficult at first gives you a feeling of accomplishment and you will be more likely to continue in the pursuit of your goals.
4. Encompassing. The goal setting process should be encompassing, meaning you should have goals in all six areas of life, including the mental, physical, social, career, family, and spiritual. This helps you to establish balance.
5. Realistic/Believable. Your goals have to be realistic and then and only then do they become believable. If you are working in a restaurant as a cook and you want to become president of the United States, next year. Well it's definitely not going to happen. Does't mean it can never happen, It just means that you have more planning and that should be a long term goal.
6. Compatible. Your goals must be compatible. You cannot have a goal in one area of life that conflicts with a goal of another area of life.
7. Specific. Goals must be specific. You should have a deadline mapped out for their accomplishment. You should have goals that are short - term ( up to one year)
intermediate term - The time frame to complete these goals is 2 to 4 years.
8. Workable - Finally you need a workable plan. It's time to establish a blue print that will enable you to accomplish your goals.
Implement these tips into the framework of your goal setting process and you to will become a success. It has to work and you are guaranteed to get results you are looking for.
