Practice makes perfect and basketball is no exception. Unlike free throws, jump shots will require you to be more aware of your core and utilize your legs.
When working to improve your jump shot, it is best to practice in increments. Start closer to the basket with layups and close range bank shots. This will help you improve your accuracy and control. Focus on your aim and determine if aiming toward the hoop or the backboard is more precise for you.
Once you are confident in your close range shots, move to the free throw line. Don't let your arms and wrists do all of the shooting for you. Keep your knees bent, shoulders squared, and your eye on the basket. Free throws are a great way to practice your form and follow-through. When you let your knees provide momentum for your core and your elbows and wrists release the ball in full form while keeping your shoulders square to the goal, you are using multiple muscles in your body and improving your shooting skills.
Your jump shot will come more naturally after you have perfected the basic shooting forms via short range and free throw shots. When practicing your jump shot, you may want to work with a partner to pass you the ball so that you can practice your shooting form while in transition. Practice with shorter ranges and slowly increase your range until you are beyond the arc. Keeping your shoulders square with the goal will improve your accuracy. When you reach these farther distances, your legs will become more vital in your shooting form.
