Finding truth

by Angela S. Young

Created on: May 25, 2007

In this modern day of relativism, truth seems to be whatever you want it to be. A rational person has to realize that is not truth, though. I think almost everyone would agree that there are some basic things that are true in every situation. Cold blooded murder is wrong. Stealing from someone not out of the necessity of needing to eat is wrong. Poking someone's eyes out for fun is wrong. You get the picture I'm sure.

So, if somethings are absolutely true, doesn't that mean that some things are absolutely true? Hmmm wrap your mind around that one. What I'm trying to say is that absolute truth exists. We may try to justify our actions by persuading ourselves it's OK, but if absolute truth exists, and we disagree, our way is not truth. Unfortunately, many people have bought into the lie that truth is what you want it to be. If it feels good, it's OK and all that. But just because someone keeps saying it aloud doesn't make it truth.

From a Biblical perspective, it is easy to find the truth (although you can't tell that by some 'Christians'. From this perspective: God is truth. Jesus said, I am the way the truth and the life. So, in that sense, if He is the truth and we are against him, we are not in the truth but in a lie. So for me, a trip to the Bible can usually clarify for me whether something is absolute truth or not.

For the rest of you, I think there is somewhere inside an 'innate' knowing that some activities are just wrong and that some things are not truth. People are so good at denial and justification, however, that they've lost the ability to hear that little voice saying "no, this is not the truth". After all, we hear it from our politicians all the time. Even a lot of ministers and others who should know better have bought into some of the falsehoods around today.

For that reason, I believe it is important to agree that there are absolute truths, and that everyone should be held accountable for those. Some things do come into the gray areas, but the things that matter should not be seen as gray. We should be willing to take a stand for the truth as black or white with no shades of gray.

Will this happen? I seriously doubt it. We're unwilling to back up and have to give up some of our choices, as we would should we admit we've been living a falsehood. As the Bible says: the truth shall make you free. But sometimes finding that truth can make you crazy.
