They are free to take classes, go to camps, participate in groups, or even travel during times when most children are unable to. They are also able to keep going with their studies if they wish. Rather than taking long breaks during the summer and attempting to begin again, often by reteaching many of the things taught the previous school term yet forgotten over the summer, homeschool children are able to move from one level to the next with as little break as they wish. By doing this they are often able to complete their required course work early and without worrying about forgetting information during the long breaks. This allows many to attend college early, to travel before college without being behind their peers, or to focus on an interest or area more deeply before committing themselves to college.
Another advantage of homeschooling is the socialization aspect. Though most believe the myth that homeschoolers have less socialization, the opposite is actually more true. Homeschool students are more able to move freely through society and interact with people of all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles. By homeschooling they can participate in their community during the day and join activities and groups that are not available to formally educated children. It is the children of formal education who are often without proper socialization. rather than allowed to interact with the "real world' they spend their days sitting in small rooms, surrounded only with other of the same age and often the same background, and yet unable to talk freely with anyone except during small intervals of tightly scheduled time. Where as homeschooled children learn how to be in society from family, neighbors, and other adults that they meet and interact with daily; formally educated children are expected to teach each other how to behave in a world that they are locked away from all day.
There are many more advantages to homeschooling that vary from family to family. Advantages such as lower costs, less peer pressure, better able to instill morals, freedom to choose the curriculum, and more. There are even some little advantages of homeschooling that many do not think about. Such as not worrying about buying a home in a certain school district which can be more expensive or never worrying about an absence from school.
When we stop to look at all the numerous advantages that homeschooling has over formal education it becomes clear that of the two options homeschooling is the winner. Of course, as I mentioned at the beginning of this every situation and every child is different. There may be times when homeschooling is not practical for various reasons for some families. But over all homeschooling is the superior educational choice.
