The death penalty is illogical. First and foremost, too many times the wrong person is accused and convicted of a heinous crime. To have the responsibility of the death of even ONE innocent person is unnecessary blood on our hands. Secondly, the death penalty is not a strong enough deterrent if the murderer has more to gain than he believes his insignificant life is worth.
Now, a serial killer or a child molester killer is the epitome of evil. Their psychology is so twisted until there is no logic at all in their thought processes. They are already psychologically dead. They should be punished with a penalty worse than death (i.e., a life sentence under the harshest conditions in a work camp somewhere like Lower Slobovia, etc.). Statistics have proven that murder does not decrease in a society that imposes the death penalty, but there are punishments worse than death. I do believe that these evil psychopaths should be punished with the same kind of cruel ingenuity that they have imposed on their innocent victims.
However, a person who kills in a fit of jealous rage or for material gain should not be punished the same way. Jealousy can induce temporary insanity. Also, hunger can impose a form of insanity, especially if there are children involved. Each case should be handled with extreme scrutiny. To execute a father who accidentally kills the person he is stealing food from for his children is not justice and teaches no lessons in deterring murder.
It is redundant to say that the death penalty could be an effective crime deterrent. In any event, the killer would already have killed the victim and the death penalty would not bring the victim back.
