While there is and probably always will be a debate on this issue, as an automotive journalist and radio show host, I've answered the question many times. Here's the way technicians and manufacturers alike respond. If it is suggested that a premium grade is preferred, then use the premium grade. Will it damage the engine if you use regular? Over the long haul, probably, but for sure performance will suffer, your engine could detonate which is what is happening when you hear that "pinging" noise.
So, all in all, if you bought a vehicle that uses a premium grade fuel, pay the piper and treat it as it should be treated. If you check out some of the reviews I've done at www.twofortheroadusa.com, it will re-enforce what you already know about the price of cars today. Here's what I find most interesting. If I ask you if spending $25.00 a month for something you enjoy, is it really a big deal? If you drive 20,000 miles a year, get 20mpg you'll use 1,000 gallons of gas a year. At plus .30 cents for premium, you're spending $300.00 a year or 25 bucks a month. How big a deal is that?
