Rudy Giuliani: Knight or President

by Ronald Gibson

Created on: May 25, 2007   Last Updated: May 27, 2007

I know this is a technicality but things like this can really show a man's respect or lack thereof for the Constitution. Article I section 9 clause 8 states "No title of nobility shall be granted by the United States: and no person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state." Rudy Giuliani has accepted an honorary knighthood from the Queen of England. I understand that an honorary knighthood doesn't make him a member of their armed forces but it does technically make him a British knight. For those who may think this is a hoax, I searched for a reliable source before posting this just to make sure. The CBS news website has a picture of him holding his Knight Commander of the British Empire award in an article dated London February 13, 2002. I know that CBS is not the most trusted name in news, despite their slogan, but they wouldn't put something like this on their website if it didn't actually happen, since it was no doubt a public ceremony and many people saw it happen. I will be very interested to see what this Presidential candidate has to say when the news media finally realizes this and asks him about it. Of course I wouldn't be surprised if the mainstream news media chose not to mention this issue but eventually it will catch up to him and he will have to respond to it. Personally if the Queen had offered me such an honor, I would have thanked her profusely, than reminded her of our Constitutions prohibition on it since I hope to some day be elected to an office of our government, and tactfully declined the offer. Hoping in my heart that she had more respect for our Constitution than her predecessor King George III who tore it to shreds the first time John Adams presented him with a copy of it while serving as Ambassador to England. By the way I am aware that Ronald Reagan was knighted by the same queen in 1989. Remember that he served as president from 1980-1988 so by 1989 he was already unable to serve in any public office in this country anymore, thanks to term limits on the Presidency and rules that say a former President can't hold any other elected or non-elected government position.
