What is it about fantasy that draws us in? Is it the Happy Ending, or is it perhaps the promise of an Epic Adventure? To be quite honest, I think that it's a bit of both.
I've noticed in my 'fantasy world', that things are never quite as they seem... even though inevitably this does lead to a happy ending. The chances are quite great that in order to reach an acceptable concluding point that each person, or character, has some great turmoil to go through. And much of that turmoil comes from circumstances partially of their own making. Because of that then, we are presented with the machinations of escaping said circumstance.
On the chance that the fantasy is a series, well then that's an entirely different story. In this case the plot is driven with the constant threat of coming calamity. And as sad as this is to say, calamity breeds humor. And humor-even laced with the sense of impending doom-breeds contentment and further interest. Especially when it comes to questing.
To be quite honest, questing-in our life or in other circumstances-engenders fantasy. Our everyday life is colored with fantasy. "If I ever win the lottery..." "I wish I had the time to...." "If I were them, then I would...." Whoever said that society had lost it's imagination, was sorely mistaken. For if it weren't for imagination, we couldn't fantasize. And fantasy is the fabric of reality.
