When you think of many legendary professional athletes
such as Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Walter Payton and
Wayne Gretzky, what do they have in common?
They were all winners without using steroids.
They would all agree steroids should NEVER be used in
professional sports.
Former professional athletes such as the 1988 American League
Most Valuable Player and 1989 World Series champion, Jose
Canseco and four-time Super Bowl champion, Bill Romanowski,
admitted to taking steroids. Even though, they won
championships, they were not really winners. They cheated.
They took shortcuts by using steroids. When other players
had to lift weights everyday and eat right, individuals,
like Canseco, used steroids and ate poorly while they watched
their muscles grow without putting the same effort
into their workout routine as "clean" professional athletes.
"Dirty" athletes have an unfair advantage. Steroids
help them heal quicker from injuries which allow them
to play more games and have more opportunities to excel
as opposed to a "clean" athlete who would have a
longer wait for his injury to heal.
Professional sports leagues are now understanding steroids
are a problem. Major League baseball has stepped up by
implementing harsher penalties for steroid use. As well,
the other sports leagues have their own steroid policies.
Professional athletes must understand steroids are not
the key to success. Eventually, the ones who use steroids
will be caught. Once they are, they will not only have to deal
with the career ramifications but the health concerns as well.
