Researching home-based business opportunities

Created on: May 25, 2007

There are two key concepts that are absolutely vital to considering home-based business opportunities: Research and Self-Awareness.

Today researching home-based business opportunities is easier than ever. The advent of the Internet has made research of all kinds fast and easy. Unfortunately, it has made research more necessary than ever. Twenty or thirty years ago, the number and nature of home-based businesses was very different than it is today. Your options then included Avon, Tupperware, and home-based daycare.

Today the situation is very different. The number of home-based business opportunities out there is seemingly limitless. An Internet search of the term returns literally thousands of pages. This is why research is so important today. This is also why self-awareness must be considered.

There are seemingly unlimited opportunities to earn money in your pajamas today. Many promise earnings rivaling some of the top CEOs in the country. Some of the opportunities found on the Internet today are legitimate opportunities, some are abject scams. Some make promises that are simply too good to be true- not scams per-se, but a little too pie-in-the-sky. Research is extremely important. Before you sign-on, and certainly before you send cash, research the company. The Better Business Bureau will give you a report on the company for free. Check it out. The report will tell you if there have been complaints by customers or by individuals who have worked for/been in business with the company (for example a company I once researched had multiple complaints that its business practices amounted to a pyramid scheme).

The next important step is self-awareness. This may be the harder of the two steps. It is easy to Google the term home-business. It is easy to read about various home-business opportunities. It is relatively easy to check them out with the Better Business Bureau or other consumer protection sites. But self-check can be very hard. The opportunity is promising great money for assembling toys at home. Are you going to spend 8-12 hours a day assembling the toys? Are you at all adept at assembling toys? Is the work going to be something you will enjoy and do readily or is it something you will dread and avoid at all costs. At home it is much easier to avoid your work than at the office when colleagues and bosses are peering over the cubicle walls.

If you combine good research and true self-awareness; it is find a great home-business opportunity that will fit your lifestyle and income needs.
