Part of me sees no reason why I should defend metal - it's a form of music (and one that happens to be my absolute favourite) and if someone else doesn't like it, then it's them who's missing out, not me.
With that said, I just can't help leaping to its defense whenever someone dismisses it as 'just noise'. I suppose it could be similar to the way a rap fan might jump to rap's defense if someone like me was to bad mouth it. I guess it's human nature really. If we love something and feel passionate about it, it's sometimes difficult to comprehend why someone else can't even stand to listen to it.
Metal is more than just one type of music. It's made up of hundreds (well, it seems like it!) of sub-genres. Some are incredibly brutal, while others remain melodic. For any first time listener, I would recommend that they begin with one of the more melodic bands, such as Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden or, more recently, Machine Men or Lacuna Coil. It's more than likely that they may have already heard some of these bands on the radio or seen videos on TV and so it won't be such a shock to them as something like Spawn Of Possession's latest album "Noctambulant" (SOP are a Technical Brutal Death Metal Band) which may make them just dismiss the genre as a whole.
