Selling Cars

Criteria for establishing a selling price on your used car

Remember that you have something you don't want anymore, and you want someone else to want it badly enough that they will give you their hard earned money for it. So don't try to play any tricks or pull the wool over anyone's eyes, it is far more trouble than its worth.

In order to get a ballpark idea of what your car is worth, there are a variety of helpful websites including edmunds.com, the Kelly Blue Book site (remember how you used to have to go to the bookstore and look it up in the book...) at kbb.com and a host of others, but those are two of the most widely recognized. You simply put in all the information about your car, make, model, year, condition, and they give you the pricing for a personal sale, how much a dealer will likely pay you for it, etc. Remember again to be honest about the condition of the car. Someone is going to do you a favor by paying you more than any dealer will give you for the car, sometimes a lot more, so don't misrepresent the car.

If you still aren't sure, one really fantastic method of finding out what cars like yours have sold for is checking ebay motors and going to sales history. You can look up the past sales of your exact make and model (assuming someone's sold one on ebay, which is usually a pretty safe assumption for most cars) and find out what people paid for them. This is also helpful in judging the market and making sure that someone will actually buy your car.

Once you have gotten a basic idea of the cost of your car, you can start making decisions as to where to list it, online, in the local newspaper, perhaps at a shop you know keeps a bulletin board for cars for sale, whatever is comfortable for you.
