The
internet did level the playing field. It allowed those with disabilities to compete for jobs despite our disabilities. We did become viable members
of society as Jeannie believed was possible in the future as the internet grew. My only regret is that she did not live long enough to witness the changes the internet of today brought those with disabilities whose only desire was to find work to earn a decent living, find friends they could talk
with about disabilities, and feel normal again and/or for the first time in their lives.
The internet changed the world for everyone with disabilities and that change was for the best. Thousands upon thousands working online
providing customer support, tech support, data entry, service calls, medical transcription, and the list goes on forever. Jeannie explained to me once when I felt especially depressed one day, "There is only one constant in life and that is change. Learn to live from it and live with it. You're future is out there. You simply have to get off your duff and find it."
Jeannie Darquenne was a wonderful woman, aspiring advocate for the disabled, and a dear friend. It is amazing when I think about how her
dreams for the future came to fruition. The playing field for disabled people and non-disabled people is about as close as it can be for now but times are changing with every new invention and innovation available in the digital world of technology, computers, and the internet.
