for any hardware item on your computer.
Secondly, for those brave souls with Windows Vista (just wait, it'll get better), you may want to check to see if all your hardware is Vista Supported. Many current problems are caused by Vista not being compatible with hardware. As Vista ages, and receives more software updates, it will become a solid OS, I'm sure, but until then, you may want to stick with what you know.
Re-install Windows
Speaking of which, something that may help: a fresh install of Windows. Check your manual for information on this.
.SWP Files
The SWP file is a necessary data file that contains temporary information loaded in your computer (basically). Think of it like a grocery cart.
It is possible to adjust the size of the SWP file to speed up your computer, I do not recommend it without some expertise. Do some research before you risk your computer.
Virus Infection and Anti-Virus Infection
Do you have a virus? Are large amounts of your hard drive suddenly filled up?
What about your anti-virus program? Sometimes, anti-virus programs will attempt to update their information automatically (See Automatic Update, above). This automatic service can cause your computer to slow down. Make sure that you update your anti-virus as soon as possible.
LAN issues and Internet Service Provider Issues
Lastly, is your computer slow or is your internet connection slow? Maybe you should try calling your service provider and see if your connection has been running slow, or if there is an outage in the area.
To Summarize:
Fixing a computer can be a difficult task. Hopefully, if you check each item with care, you can figure out what you need to do to speed up your computer.
One final reminder: if you want to fix your computer on your own, you're taking a risk. Think about how much time you'd have to spend fixing an issue that may not be the root of the cause. Always, always, always back-up your important data.
If you want to fix your computer on your own, make sure to do the research and learn how changing your configurations will affect performance.
Good luck; don't forget, you can always donate your used computers to charity! If your computer is too slow, I know a great computer lab that can use it!
