This is a somewhat strange subject, since most of the articles posted here are more about the bands themselves, rather than comparing and ranking heavy metal bands.

Comparing one band to another is relatively simple. It's easy to put two band's works side by side and then decide which one you prefer over the other. Ranking bands, however, is an entirely more difficult task. It's easier to rank bands when you are just using your own tastes, but when you need to take into account the tastes of others then the process becomes much more difficult. What makes a heavy metal band good? What should we class as 'heavy metal'? Should we include sub-genres? Should we include new bands?

I'm a bit of a forum addict and, on music forums, I often find myself faced with the question "Who are your Top 10 Favourite Bands?" and I find that my list changes from site to site. Is it because my tastes change that quickly? No, of course not. It's mostly down to my mood, or which particular albums I've been listening to that day.

So, ranking heavy metal bands is much more difficult than you may think.
