My father used to often sing the old song that began, "The moon belongs to everyone. The best things in life are free." While it may actually be technically correct to say that the moon belongs to nobody, the idea that everyone can enjoy things such as moonlight or a view of a particularly nice full moon is what is conveyed by this song.
The idea that the best things in life are free comes from an awareness that the most meaningful and most awe-inspiring things in life do not, in fact, cost money. Enjoying striking sunrises, beautiful sunsets, the ocean, sparkling lakes, or mountains generally doesn't always have to cost money. A baby's first smile or first laugh or first steps are among the best things in life. Appreciating the striking beauty of all the world's living creatures takes nothing more than some thought or feeling. And, as The Beatles once reminded us, money can't buy love.
Laughing with a friend or two, singing to a baby, reminiscing with a family member - all free. Hope, dreams, and integrity are free as well.
Money can certainly buy some very beautiful things; but when it comes down to it, the most beautiful things - and therefore the best things - in life really are free.
