Health tips for your Mexican vacation

A small amount of prevention can go a long ways when visiting places like Mexico on your vacation. Tropical ailments exist in Mexico that are not common in more northern climates. In addition, a high percentage of travelers to Mexico experience a common type of diarrhea due to bacteria in the water and food to which visitors have no immunity. There is no reason for alarm, simple solutions are available.

When preparing for any trip out of country, any needed medicines should be taken with you. The type of diarrhea suffered by travelers in Mexico is usually quite mild, but annoying none the less. Your local doctor can supply you with the prescription for a Quinolone antibiotic such as cipro, to fight any infection should you get one. Along with that, an anti-diarrheal medicine such as lomotil or immodium will fix you up as good as new.

A keen eye should be used regarding the cleanliness of any food or drink consumed. Street vendors should be avoided, and bottled drinks are recommended. There is no need to be foolish. Fresh vegetables, and fruits can also be suspect for contamination, even if rinsed thoroughly, because the water may not be germ-free. Personally, I do not overdue the caution thing because I want the experience of enjoying my food as well as the culture.

Some diseases are common to tropical climates such as Mexico, and it would be a good idea to check with your doctor to see if he recommends any vaccinations such as yellow fever, or an updated tetanus/diphtheria injection. It is always better to be safe, than sorry.

The good news about health relating to your trip to Mexico is that Mexican doctors are quite accessible, and excellent at treating common ailments. In addition, pharmacies abound in Mexico. The Mexican pharmacist is able to diagnose, and dispense non-narcotic medications without prescription. Should you need antibiotics, or other medicines, you do not even need to consult a doctor if you do not have an emergency situation. By the way, the cost of most medicines is much less than here in the United States.

Mexico is a beautiful country, with outstanding attractions for tourism. Health concerns are understandable, but not an issue in Mexico. With reasonable vigilance, and normal precautions, wonderful memories are a great reward for your efforts. Don't forget your camera!
