is possible to survive without starving. Rationing will be an art best known. Most of the people in your base will require much less food than they're used to since they will be less active in such a small area.
When rationing the food it is important to stick to a steady amount that will sustain a person. At first it will be hard for everyone to adjust because of their own unique habits. But, after approximately 21 days their eating habits will have been realigned and there will be little protest. It shouldn't be hard, since that first three weeks will keep their minds off food and on other tasks.
On either the top floor of the building, the roof, or a secure greenhouse/backyard there should be a garden immediately started. It's only necessary to fortify it for temporary safety of those who work the gardens, rather than the heavy fortification in the houses. Zombies tend to be uninterested in plants, and therefore, they won't destroy them unless they know it's a food source and they intentionally destroy it (in which case that kind of intelligence should be the worst worry of yours).
Also, if possible stock up on non-perishable goods before fortifying.
SUPPLIES NEEDED- to sustain a family of four for a while without leaving fortress (adjust accordingly for availability, preparedness, time secluded, and number of people)

Anything Else Imaginable
IMMEDIATE SURVIVAL:
Kill as many of the Zombies as you can and burn them (make sure it's a distance from your base).
Try and find other survivors within reason.
Hoard supplies especially water and food in the first day before the zombies reach top population.
Remember that water/power/utilities will go out soon.
Find a fortifiable place in an unpopulated area, if home base is not available.
Only travel during the day.
Remember the buddy system
And don't do anything stupid.
