for their doors and windows. When we're dealing with windows, you can leave them as they are and just try to fortify when the Zombies come a' knockin', or deal with it when installing.
When installing the windows make sure you opt for a removable metal slider rooted above the window in the wall. It will only be visible by a pull handle and a latch at the bottom of the window. When the apocalypse comes, you will simply have to pull the sheets of metal down from inside the house and latch them to the anchors already installed.
The same technique can be used for your doors, but also make sure the doors you have are either very heavy wood or steel. Also, install measures as fail-safes for the hinges on the doors. A heavy door is great, but the hinges are its weakness. Find the heart or ability to install multiple crossbars that are rooted in the wall. Practical use: Key and coat hooks.
Often, in other Zombie Plans, it is suggested that a large area be secured, like a department or grocery store, but those areas are very hard to guard and/or fortify in a timely fashion. Most stores have loading docks that are gigantic entranced for the undead. Sure, these stores have everything you'd need for the short term, but the huge space just isn't practical in a zombified situation, not to mention illegal in the case of epidemic or war (which will cause problems under military rule).
REPOPULATION AND SURVIVAL AFTER FORTIFICATION:
You will need room for multiple people, but not so much space that it's impossible. Ideally, to repopulate the world/country with enough diversity to sustain a race there will need to be 38 pairs of people or more. Otherwise the species is virtually doomed after a few generations (because inbreeding will ensue).
In the apartment scenario it would be a tight fit, but if you can band two buildings together, it may work out just fine. In the case of this scenario it is also safer to have the people spread out a little between three or four apartments. The transverse bulkhead idea is what applies here. If the fortification in one unit is destroyed, it doesn't doom everyone else.
For houses, if you and your neighbors can establish your houses as safety points and establish a line of communication it may also work out, but the fewer houses you can use for the sustainable population the better. The object of the survival game is to take up as little vulnerable space as possible without making easy targets.
FOOD:
As for food, gluttony is far from possible, but it
