base. Say for example, the building has six apartments stacked three high in pairs. Abandon the two lowest apartments and lightly fortify them. The Zombies will have little interest in these apartments once they've ransacked them once or twice. The second and third floors are the perfect places.

Often in apartments there is a patio with an exit from the apartment, as well as a front door. The front doors to all of the apartments must be fortified with metal bars and or wood planks. This is the weakest part of your defense. If you have the ability, destroy the stairs leading to the doors on the upper floors. Also, fortify the walls in rooms with outside walls that may be accessible by the ground, as well as those surrounding the entrance.

The patios on the second floor are nearly useless except as possible extensions to the living quarters, or emergency exits, but I would suggest fortification also. The patios on the third floor though are very valuable. Since the third floor is nearly impossible for zombies to get to, it can be used as a storage facility or virtual green house.

The families/groups of people you have banded together will need a renewable food source for at least some of the food, and if you fill the top apartments with dirt and seed- with open windows and sunlight, you'll have a nice little garden.

Speaking of open windows, it would be acceptable to leave the top five inches of windows uncovered to let in natural light to save power, and raise spirits, since zombies won't get in five inches of window on the second floor. Just make sure it doesn't weaken the fortification.

HOUSES:

Houses are much easier on the preparation end, because fortification can be done any time. If you decided to build your own house, using steel in the skeleton structure would make the house strong against WWIII scenarios and pillaging. Concrete is also ideal as a medium for most of the house.

Most folks would be worried about their neighbors questioning their sanity, so there are practical uses for your fortifications before the apocalypse. When you build the house and fill the walls with concrete, you're simply investing in a good insulation technique for low cost. Concrete retains warmth and cold according to the majority of its exposure to a temperature. Concrete is also sturdy against natural disasters like tornados and hurricanes.

The concrete is the easiest and cheapest fortification, and it has practical non-zombie use. Aside from concrete though, houses need protection
