Everyone who has any semblance of intelligence (or will to survive apocalypse or massive epidemic) needs a Zombie Plan. Some people say Zombie Plans are for the weak of mind or the nerds out there, but the basic premise of the plan, though based in the science fiction realm will still apply to circumstances stemming from the next world war, or invasion (human, animal, or otherwise).
If in fact there is an epidemic or Zombie event, your fortress/home base needs only to last for five years or so. Three to five years is the approximate time it would take for an extent such as this to clear up satisfactorily. The first year would be the infection stage, in which the entire population of Zombies will be made or the majority of the population will be killed off and/or infected. The remaining time, you must lay-low because the Zombies will either become more intelligent, or more instinctive. Their food/attack supply will be lowered, therefore, with heightened demand the Zombies will either turn against each other in cannibalism, or wither away. The outcome both ways remains the same. Eventually these undead fiends will rot away. It's not necessary to wait for them to completely rot out, since their muscles and brain stem will become inoperable first from the decomposition.
If you live in an area of extreme heat or cold the weather may work to your advantage. In the heat decomposition is accelerated. In the cold, though decomposition is decelerated, the Zombies may succumb to the elements and freeze, allowing the ice to kill them, or you to kill them while they're in suspended animation.
The first thing to understand is that there are basic features to the Zombie Plan no matter what you're dealing with. These are things that can usually be taken care of ahead of time before there is ever a Zombie Apocalypse, and these things need to be done anyways, because thing like this don't give you one weeks notice before they happen.
First, it's most important to have a fortified residence, or one at least that has limited accessibility. There are two ideal situations for the fortification and sustainability, depending on where you live now.
APARTMENTS:
If you live in a smaller apartment complex, one with several buildings housing a few units per building, the building you're living in would be a good home
