English soccer fans are fortunate to have arguably the best top league in world football, with Spain the only real rival in the last few years. The top players, and therefore best skills, the biggest showmanship and some of Europe's top managers combine to produce thrilling football on a weekly basis. Despite the division being dominated by the 'big four', and the title only recently being fought between two of those teams, any club on its day can beat Chelsea or United, as we have witnessed this season at Middlesborough and West Ham, just a couple of such examples.
Therefore any argument that the division is predictable at the start of the season is rendered almost irrelevant; just ask the fans of Aston Villa or Manchester City (or any other club in any division of England) where they'd rather travel - Old Trafford or Molyneux?
This doesn't belittle the football league: games are often exciting and the Championship in particular this season has been as good as any in recent times. But the skill level is too low (proved by the constant rebound of clubs that are promoted from it) and the average armchair fan wants to watch the best players, rapid pace, silky football and big names that the Premiership attracts.
Football these days, as sport in general, has (very unfortunately in my opinion) become a business first and a spectator sport second, and the money generated by the Premier League (some of which, though too little I admit, is shared with the Football League clubs) affords English fans, and players, the chance to watch the best in the world every week. I don't know many fans that would change that for the world.
