"Separation of church and state."

This argument is often used by the opponents of Christmas, unfortunately their argument is flawed. The "separation phrase" was written into the Constitution so keep the state out of the church, not the other way around. The pilgrims came here because the government of their country tried to regulate their religious beliefs. America was founded by religious people escaping dictating governments. Our founding fathers wanted the church to be involved in politics because everyone was a Christian (or at least claimed to be) and it was expected that they bring their beliefs to the table. What they didn't want was for the state to dictate to the church what it could and couldn't do.

This being said, displaying Christian symbols (or any other symbol for that matter) in public places is not in contradiction to the constitution.

Finally, Christmas has evolved over the years to be more secular than sacred. Christmas is a national holiday, celebrated by Americans, and is just as American as apple pie. But as our country becomes more of a melting pot there will be more holidays celebrated by more people. America is all about religious freedom, therefore there is nothing wrong with the officials or administrators of public places to decide which of these holidays to decorate for. Let Wal-Mart put up Christmas decorations and let the local bowling alley put up the Star of David. Do whatever you want. It's America.

Merry Christmas
