The history of Juneteenth

Juneteenth originated in Galveston, Texas and commemorates June 19, 1865. On that day, General Gordon Granger (Union) and some 2,000 troops arrived on Galveston Island to take control of the state of Texas, as well as enforce the rights of newly freed African-Americans.
Since its creation in Galveston, the state of Texas has been home to the majority of Juneteenth celebrations. In 1980 it became an official state holiday, and although state offices are not closed, some employees take a day off using a floating holiday. aside from Texas, thirteen other states observe Juneteenth.

Festivities on the holiday include rodeos, fishing, barbecuing and baseball, and certain foods and ideas have become a staple during the celebration. Participants often focus on the importance of education and self-improvement, and prayer during this holiday has become tradition. Elders are also usually brought to Juneteenth to talk to the masses about the events of the past.
Along with barbecues that include lamb, beef and pork, strawberry flavored soda has become a popular item.

The reason the Juneteenth is still celebrated today, is that the holiday embraces the events of the past, as well as addresses the importance of the emancipation of the slaves. People gather on that day to remember their ancestors and their heritage.
