Movie reviews: Music and Lyrics

I love Drew Barrymore and have since Fire Starter and E.T. Have you ever seen a movie that is so 'you' it is unreal. Regardless of the flaws, the silliness and corny scripts, looking at the big picture paints the story of my present life. It is like a dream in a dream but in all actuality, my life in this moment in time. It is amazing how things throughout our life come at the perfect time. Like I said, I do not watch movies, but was compelled to watch this one for some reason. Oh, yes, if you don't want to know the 'core' of the story just yet, wait to watch the movie before reading this review.

Sophie, a woman hiding behind a past of pain and humiliation, becomes a plant caretaker for a former Pop star artist who has lost his touch and is looking to spark his musical career. The perfect opportunity arises when Cora (the most popular pop star of this day) is looking for lyrics to a new single that she is wanting to sing. Alex, is introduced to Cora and has a week to write the lyrics for the superstar.

Having lost that musical touch, Alex finds it in Sophie, who is in denial about her talent, because of a book that is written about her life. Her former teacher and crush has taken her life and put it into his best seller. This has caused Sophie undeniable emotional anguish and has forced her to hide her talent so much that she doesn't realize she is a natural born lyricist.

Discovering her hidden talent (that has been revealed through helping Alex write lyrics to this new pop single) Sophie uncovers Alex's mistake from his last album. Together, they discover the passion behind the music and the purpose of the song. The importance of the nature in the music is learned through bringing the lyrics and the melody together. This forms the soul of the song and brings balance to the rhythm and tune. Through this they fall in love but it isn't revealed until later. Just when she thinks that moment of passion in her talent has fainted, Sophie finds that the melody has always been set in tune.

Despite the 'blonde ditziness' that is a complete turn off for me in most movies, I really could look past all that to see the heart of the message in this movie. I can relate to Sophie in that sense even. I find myself in her position in my present life. Covered from hurt in the past, it takes facing it to see who we really are. I am so glad I watched this movie. It inspired me greatly. Kudos to Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. I give Music and Lyrics 3 stars. If you don't know who you are, find it in a song.
