Does reality TV help people reach instant celebrity status

Here in the UK, we have programs like Big Brother and Pop Idol, where even the losers get a career (well, about 70 per cent of teenagers in Britain think being a celebrity is a career choice).

Usually, you could have maybe the winner of something like this, that MIGHT go on to success. Now we have the top 10 that all gets record deals and the cheesier they are the better.

Big Brother has one use for me, it's a brilliant natural sedative. It is possibly the most boring thing I have ever seen.

These people become national 'icons' - I feel sick just typing it. They are the debate around workplaces despite the fact there are more important things to talk (paint drying world championships for one).

Short story is - yes - they can get celebrity status for just existing these days. What a world we live in.
