How to make the most of your time when studying

To make the most of your time when studying, invest in some top-notch time management strategies. Good time management can save precious hours of studying time.

1. Exploit any "dead time" to the max. ( Always make sure to have at least one of your text-books and a small notebook with you when you travel.) It is amazing how much time we can waste in transit, missing connections, in waiting rooms etc. Add all those chunks together and it can soon amass to a sizable chunk of revision time, perhaps even enough to cover an essay-writing session. This wasted time can help you make the most of study time by including it into traveling.

2. When your brain is tired, take a break. It can be refreshing sometimes, just to pack up all your studying stuff and head off for a green open space, park bench or quiet beach where the fresh air and silence can aid concentration.! A change is as good as a rest!

3. Exercise is good for writers block. Try swimming, jogging or just walking to reflect on a thorny or troubling issue.Often a rested, refreshed brain can make the most of study time - a tired, jaded mind will not be at its best when revising.

4. Study together with others reading the same major - eat together, chat about the issues, bounce ideas and arguments - then get down to some serious studying and discussion. Keep on track though - it is important to keep each other focused!

5. Use all the various media available to you as it is good for the mind to learn in different ways - Library, Class Notes, Podcasts, Internet, DVD etc - research what is available in your subject. Nowadays, devices such as the Kindle can prove valuable for reading texts when traveling. They are lightweight and compact and can save dragging loads of cumbersome books around.

6. Be an early riser to make the most of the day! Hours in the morning particularly, soon slip away towards lunch! It is better to start bright and early with the tasks that must be done - and then take a short break once the day's main study challenge is well under way. In order to achieve this, it will usually be necessary to keep regular hours and get to sleep at a reasonable hour!

7. Make good use of outlining techniques. This can save wasted time and effort when drafting and redrafting term papers and essays. Ensure you are happy with your plan, and that you have not left any important categories out, before you start to get those all-important ideas down on paper.

8. If reading is tiring you, then try making some recordings for your ipod or iphone. That way you can listen along while you travel or take a relaxing walk or wait in line.

9. Invest in some valuable study-aid books such as College Study Skills:Becoming a Strategic Learner by

Dianna L. Van Blerkom

10. Also invest in some therapeutic relaxation CDs or classes. Yoga is renowned world-wide for calming the mind and soothing the emotions. Buddhism also is valued for promoting detachment, reflection and meditation which are all good for emptying, resting and re-invigorating a busy mind!

Be creative and constructive in your approach to studying - and be kind to yourself -know when enough is enough for the day! Making the most of your time when studying includes building in enough rest time for the brain, and rest and recuperation time to ensure an uncluttered mind.

A combination of some or all of these strategies must surely help to make the most of student time while studying at college.
