Tips for writing the best blog

How to Write a Good Blog

There are millions of blogs out there, on millions of different subjects - so how can you make sure that people read yours?
Here are a few tips on writing a good blog, and making sure that your readers stay interested.

Be Personal - When writing your blog, make sure that you write the way you talk. Write as if you are having a conversation with your reader. You can even ask your reader questions. This will encourage your readers to leave comments on your blog, and come back to read more. If you write as if you are writing a formal letter or a business report, readers will get bored and read a different blog. It's as simple as that.

Good Grammar & Punctuation - Even though you should write the way you speak, you should always make sure that your spelling and grammar is correct. There is nothing worse than reading a blog set out like a text message or struggling to read a blog because of laziness with punctuation and grammar. Always spell check your blog before you publish it too. A blog full of spelling errors will confuse, distract and bore your readers.

Be Yourself - One of the most important things about writing a blog is to be yourself. Tell your readers about your hobbies, interests and opinions. Your personality will shine through your writing, and it will attract more readers. Your readers will want to get to know you, and read your blog more frequently. Share your unique thoughts and perspective on the world around you.

Generate Interest - If your blog is about nothing but your mood that day, your readers will fall asleep before they have finished the first paragraph. It is likely that they won't even read past the first sentence. Tell interesting stories, strange things that have happened in your life, or other people's. You could even write a feature on strange news in the newspapers around the world. Make your writing humorous, engaging and informative. Use funny quotations as headlines and be unique with your writing approach. Like I said, there are millions of blogs out there - you need to make sure that yours stands out. Be bold with colours and use funny pictures to compliment what you have written.

Write What You Know - There is nothing worse than reading a blog where somebody is trying to pretend they know what they are going on about. If you don't know much about keeping a snake - don't try writing about it! When someone does that, you can tell straight away. The writing sounds very fake and plastic-like. You don't want that to happen in your writing.

Update Frequently - If you are going to keep a blog, you need to update it frequently. This can be once every day, once a week or even once a month, but keep it regular. Your readers will be disappointed if they are ready for a new instalment and there isn't one.

DON'T

Make personal attacks on other people, other blogs or anything - it will make you look vicious and petty. A bit of disagreement and constructive arguments are fine - but don't be bitchy!

Reveal other people's personal information. Make sure you have permission if you are writing about personal experiences or a real person. If you can't get permission, just change names around and make sure that it's not obvious who or what you are writing about. You can get in a lot of trouble otherwise.
