There's a lot of talk out there about writing a blog and making money doing it. But what does it really take to make money running a blog and where do you start?

I am a professional blogger. I also work with a blog network doing this on a regular basis which means I hire bloggers too.

Blogging is not a get rich quick scheme. If you are going to make it work, you'll probably have to work a day job and blog by night. It takes about eight months of serious work to have a blog that will start to make any income. If you are reading this, you probably already have a blog somewhere or are thinking of starting one because you heard there was money in it. If it's about the money, go play stocks or something, because you will burn out if that is the reason you are wanting to try blogging.

Professional Bloggers who have been in it awhile are people who write about what they are passionate about. Often.

Darren Rowse, (problogger.net) writes about blogging and making money from blogging. He is passionate about blogging.

Hsien Hsien, (eyeondna.com) writes about Genetics and DNA and medical stuff.
She is passionate about DNA.

Are you starting to get it? The bloggers out there who last, who make an impact, and make money doing it are doing because of something else. Something that motivates, something that they can write about twice a day for years on end while reading hundreds of other blogs about the same subject and still not getting completely burned out on a subject.

Every blogger hits dry spots too. There are days I look at a blank screen and think why am I doing this? Then I get a comment somewhere. I write back and again am reminded that people do care what I say. That somewhere someone is getting it and responding.

So why do I "Blog as a career"?
I love my subject, and I love interacting with other people about that subject and I can do it everyday. Making money doing it, well that's just one of the perks.
