Boston's North End is a mecca for Italian eateries, with favorites such as Ristorante Fiore, La Famiglia and Cantina Italiana. Diners can stroll throughout the neighborhood, finding hidden gems and tucked-away cafes to best meet their tastes. And of course, no diner can walk away at the end of the evening without a cannoli or neopolitian at one of the two most popular spots - Mike's Pastry (300 Hanover Street) and Modern Pastry (257 Hanover Street).
However, for those looking to dine outside of the city's traditional Italian neighborhood, there are two Italian restaurants that stand out:
1. Maggiano's Little Italy, located at 4 Columbus Ave. (just steps away from Boston's Park Plaza Hotel), offers superb dining. Appetizers range from crispy zucchini fritte to spinach & artichoke al forno. A favorite among the entrees is the chicken & spinach manicotti, topped with alfredo and baked until bubbling and golden. It's simply divine. For desert, the pound cake with caramelized bananas is by far one of the most enjoyable sweet endings I have had the pleasure of tasting.
2. Vinny T's of Boston - inspired by restaurants found in Boston's North End and Manhattan's Little Italy - is an equally satisfying experience. Located at 867 Boylston Street and 1700 Beacon Street (Brookline), the restaurant is always buzzing with activity. Known for its delicious breads and oil, the list of delectable appetizers and entrees goes on and on. A recent addition to the menu is the eggplant lasagna - similar to eggplant parmagiana, but perfected by layers of ricotta cheese.
Tip: Both restaurants also offer family-style menus, with portions ideal for large groups.
